Why I don’t pay or offer kickbacks

Trust and transparency are critical aspects of my design practice. Over the years, I’ve maintained a track record of publishing lots of information about my business that support this – rates and project durations, my process, the contract I use, etc.

Collaboration is another key element of my work. I’m never working alone and frequently collaborate with developers, copywriters, illustrators and others.

Referrals are therefore a typical part of my working practice. I’m often introduced to a client by someone already working with them, or I’m in the position of recommending someone to bring into a project.

It’s important to me that clients have zero doubts about the integrity of these referrals. Kickbacks muddy that water in almost all situations, even if a client is made aware of the fee.

For that reason, I don’t pay referral fees and won’t engage in arrangements that require them.
